5th Cell’s Jeremiah Slaczka has spoken out about the Wii U’s power and tried to lay the speculation to rest…
“(The Wii U is) definitely more powerful than Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It’s kind of frustrating to see the rumours and speculation of people going back and forth saying it’s weaker or more powerful. It’s definitely more powerful. I think we were one of the first developers to see the Wii U. Nintendo came to our studio and demoed it to us. A couple of weeks later Warner Bros. got to see it, and we said we should do this. This game was originally a Wii title but later moved to Wii U. It’s been about two years in development.” Jeremiah Slaczka, 5th Cell

‘more powerful’ is a term with little concrete meaning. we do know the wii u doesn’t support 1080p or bluray as of the latest i’ve heard. nor does it mean nintendo has any launch titles that sound good (much like the 3ds). also like the 3ds, nintendo may overprice the system for consumers’ perceived value of the system. lastly, the tablet idea would have been much better if nintendo had designed the 3ds xl to function as a controller for the wii u, combining it’s handheld system with it’s console system for a truly integrated experience. far be it from me to tell people i’m still waiting for a ds or psp (dedicated gaming handheld) that lets me make phone calls. such a device would be a powerful lure for gamers who have the handheld systems and want to cut down on pocket realty.
basically, i think if you want to travel the road nintendo is traveling, you have to realize it’s not a road but a river, and nintendo needs to jump in with both feet very soon or they’ll be left out in the cold.
I think the Wii U does support 1080p, but if you want to use one of those fancy tablet controllers (y’know, then main draw of the console) then you’re stuck with just 720p because the console struggles to render both screens at once. Maybe they should have thought about that, really…
Also, I’m sure it’s more powerful than the 360 and PS3, but since those consoles are 6-7 years old it’s not like that’s really much to brag about, haha.
It doesn’t really matter how powerful a system is, as long as it has fun and unique games.
The Wii U does feature 1080p, but Nintendo did confirm that the titles shown at E3 were running at 720p. Nintendo also said at E3, if you use two GamePad’s the frame-rate will drop from a (CONSTANT) 60fps, to 30fps. As far as I’m aware they didn’t mention the resolution.
A system’s power does matter when it’s supposed to be next-gen but it just barely beats the current-gen. It also matters when the company producing it won’t release information on its specs for some reason.
If you still find Ninty’s games fun and unique, that’s cool. Personally the only Wii games I enjoyed were all third-party; there’s only so many Mario games I can play after decades.
well, yes, if the games are fun it’s always better. but i have to agree that next-gen consoles should be aiming for a little more oomph than 2005.
