Pachter “Doesnt Get” Wii U, Claims Activision Behind Pro Controller

Pachter

It’s been a few weeks since Pachter said something stupid, so he’s made up for it in one fell swoop!

“(Wii U) isn’t going to work. I don’t get it. I think that essentially this is a solution in search of a problem. I mean, somebody had an idea – ‘let’s make the controller a tablet’ – and there aren’t many games that are going to take advantage of that. Activision never said anything to me, but I know that [for] big games like Call Of Duty they said, ‘No, we’re not putting it on there if you don’t give us a conventional controller’. So they gave in.”

“(The Wii is) gimmicky. It worked, they got lucky, [but] I don’t think they’re getting lucky with Wii U. I don’t think they suck – I just think that they really believe that, ‘If we’re still novel, everything we do will work’. This isn’t going to work. Hardcore gamers will buy them; hardcore Nintendo fanboys will buy it. They could put out a piece of cardboard and say that it’ll play Mario and they’ll buy it.”

Seriously, who pays this guy? I hope Nintendo prove him wrong (again) once the Wii U is released!

I like Nintendo, but I think the Wii U is only going to sell enough to pay for itself, and no more. It’s still catering to the casual gamers in my opinion. Now, if they got smart and integrated their 3ds into the system as a controller, then they may have something, to take the game with you on the go. but I don’t see them succeeding in the only appeal (to me) of this system being the tablet can go with you and play games away from the console. If that were the aim, then they would be competing with their own handheld market, which would be dumb. aside from that, the tablet IS a gimmick, and really doesn’t present itself to me as something more desirable than whatever sony or microsoft comes up with next.

as far as the pro controller goes, it may be the wii u’s saving grace, if you can get the system cheaper (without the tablet but the pro controller instead) and the system can actually render full hd without the tablet being involved. remember, with all the stuff involved with screens and whatnot, it’s probably a pretty heavy controller.

With present day Motion controllers(wii/kinect), developers just used the motion controls to replace buttons and joysticks(not improve)
What use could any multi-platform game have for a screen on the controller?

a start menu? in-game chat? or a map? all three will likely be seen, but it’s not doing anything that hasn’t been done before. as far as the item scanning or whatnot goes, it’s a gimmick to buy stuff and scan into the game. now if I could draw a mushroom and have one appear while playing mario, it would be cool, but probably game-breaking.

And the scan tech has already been done with Skylanders so, again, nothing new really.
